So it's a really exciting time here at the Leicester LGB&T Centre and not just because the holiday season is only a few weeks away!
We're being supported by BBC Children in Need to run a three year project specifically for young transgender people aged 0-18 years old.
Fear of how they will be treated is leading to thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGB and T) not reporting hate crimes. As a result perpetrators are evading justice, a new report published today reveals. Evidence nationally suggests around 35,000 cases of hate crime committed against people because of their sexual orientation go unreported every year.
Eighty years ago this May, one of the world's greatest pioneering sexologists and gay rights advocates died in exile with little acclaim or mourning, a victim of the unrelenting tide of Nazi persecution. Dr Magnus Hirschfeld was a trail-blazing genius who advanced the understanding of human sexuality and the advocacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) human rights at a time when it was deeply unpopular to do so. That took courage – and determination.
Although treatment advances have dramatically reduced deaths from opportunistic infections related to AIDS, a new study drawing on 30 years of data from more than 20,000 patients in San Francisco suggests there is still ample room to improve. About a third--35 percent--of AIDS patients diagnosed with their first opportunistic infection from 1997 to 2012 in that city died within five years, according to the study, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
The Lincolnshire LGBT+ Patient Group is urging as many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people as possible to complete an online survey on health and social care services.
The study used data from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA), a survey of 289,024 students from 223 U.S. universities. Researchers found that the rates of self-reported eating disorders were highest in transgender people. Heterosexual men had the lowest rates. "Transgender people were more likely to report a diagnosis of an eating disorder -- bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa -- in the past year," said senior author Alexis Duncan, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School. "They also reported using vomiting, laxatives or diet pills more for weight control in the past 30 days than cisgender men and women, regardless of their sexual orientation."
The Mary Seacole Research Group (MSRC) at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) have released a unique report showing LGBT cancer patients have poorer experiences of care than heterosexual patients. The report, entitled ‘Improving the Cancer Journey for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans People’, aims to ensure there is sufficient support, advice and consideration for LGBT cancer patients and to improve their health and wellbeing during treatment and contribute to their quality of life in survivorship.
Restorative Justice Initiative Midlands and Leicester LGBT Centre will run a workshop on “tackling Hate Crime using Restorative Justice Approaches” to celebrate IDAHOT (International Day against Homo-, Bi- and Transphobia) A crime is not just about breaking the law. More importantly, it is about damaging the relationships between members of the community. It creates an emotional wound that requires emotional healing. Restorative Justice is about restoring relationships!
Did you know churches blessed gay marriages in the 'Dark Ages'? The world's oldest porn, which dates back over 3,000 years, features both male/male, female/female and male/female couples.
The oldest ever known chat up line was apparently said between two men. A mythological story from the 20th dynasty of Ancient Egypt is between Horus and Seth, who quarrelled for 80 years on who should rule. Seth attempted to persuade Horus to sleep with him, saying: ‘How lovely are your buttocks! And how muscular your thighs!’ They then have sex.
