Welfare, health service and education have been slashed beyond recognition over the last five year. The reduction in spending has hit the voluntary sector even more substantially than other areas of government largesse. For most VCS groups these cuts have been devastating on the truly vulnerable members of our society. Estimates confirm that only 0.04% of overall voluntary sector spending goes to LGBT VCS organisations. This means that less than 4 pence in every £100 spent goes to supporting our communities. Despite the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 and changing attitudes, LGBT people in England and Wales are still being discriminated against. As demand for services targeted at LGBT people escalate in the current economic climate, less and less money is being spent on the neediest.
This report, Staying Alive, highlights the issues of underfunding and its impacts on our local LGBT communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As the General Election looms, it may prove important reading to voters.
