After many years of discussion about producing an oral history project for local LGBT people a number of local LGBT activists met in 2010 to put ‘meat on the bones’ for just such a proposal to Heritage Lottery Fund. The initial application took more than 6 months of almost daily back and forth discussions to produce a final bid. Heritage Lottery Fund responded to the bid with a resounding ‘Yes!’ Almost £50,000 was awarded for this 3 year project.
There have been many positive and unforeseen results from this project: A large number of older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans people, who had long ago forgotten that we even had an LGBT centre in Leicester, stepped forward and offered to tell their stories. The project has brought back a sense of community and a reawakening of enthusiasm for the Centre. Out of an initial estimate of 50 interviews noted in the Heritage Lottery bid, one hundred people have been finally interviewed. And the Project is not finished. Although funding from Heritage Lottery Fund has finished, the search will continue for more interviews.
